How Solar Panels Work......

Step 1: Sunlight Activates The Panels When sunlight hits a solar panel, photons (particles of energy) are converted into electrons. As electrons pass through the cells of a solar panel, they're converted into direct current(DC) electricity.
Step 2: Sunlight Energy Gets Converted The electricity that was generated when the sun hits your solar panels is now converted from (DC) Direct Current Electricity to (AC) Alternating Current Electricity with the help of an inverter. Now that electricity can be used to power everything in your home.
Step 3: Net Metering How It Works When you have a rooftop solar system the installer will also install a new type of meter for your home. With net metering, the homeowner is only billed for the "net" energy used each month, that is, the difference between the energy produced by the solar power system and the energy consumed by the house over the monthly billing period.
Step 4: Understanding the Utility Grid When your system produces more power than you are using the excess power is pushed out into the power grid and you are credited for each kWh. When you are not producing enough power to offset your usage (such as at night) you will pull from those credits saving even more money.
